Cake My Day Birthday Cards

Have you gotten your hands on the brand new Cake My Day product Collection? It is — So. Much. Fun! Such bright and bold colours, great patterns, and a funky fresh take on a traditional birthday theme.

While I absolutely love making cards of all kinds – I sometimes find that whipping up a batch of birthday cards to have on hand for when I don’t have time to create always seems to come in handy. You just never know when a birthday will slip your mind, your little one will come home from school and announce it’s time to go to a birthday party she forgot to tell you about, or life will just be too busy to allow for a bit of time to create a card on demand. When you’ve got a little stack that you can pull from in a pinch it’s nice that you’re still able to show how much you care by giving the recipient a handmade card.

The cards I have to share with you today came together in a flash! They also share a lot in  common — each of them is made with the same basic elements and then custom assembled and decorated. By making my batch of cards this way I save time by pre-cutting all of my layers to the same measurements, but I also get to get the creative juices flowing and end up with three entirely different cards.

To create these card you will need:

• Cake My Day Patterned Paper Pack
• Cake My Day Stickers
• White Solid 12″X12″ Cardstock
• Black Solid 12″X12″ Cardstock
• 12-Inch Trimmer
• All-Purpose Scissors
• The Tape Runner
• Foam Squares

Here are the elements that are the same:

• Each card has a white card base that measures 5-1/2″ X 8-1/2″ – scored at 4-1/4″
• Each card has a Cake My Day Patterned Paper layer on the base of the card that measures 3-7/8″ X 5-1/8″ which is matted by a piece of black cardstock that measures 4″ X 5-1/4″. The two pieces are adhered together with The Tape Runner. On each card this layer is adhered directly to the card base centred vertically and horizontally.
• Each card has a second Cake My Day Patterned Paper layer that measures 2-7/8″ X 3-7/8″ which is matted by a piece of black cardstock that measures 3″ X 4″. The two pieces are adhered together with The Tape Runner
• Each card uses a 3-7/8″ piece of the black chevron border sticker strip

Now I’ll walk you through how I customized each card!

Card #1:

For the first card I chose the horizontal stripes as the base patterned paper for the card. I then used foam squares and popped up the smaller layer I had created using the black polka-dot pattern. For the chevron border, I cut a flag end on one side and adhered it directly to the black polka-dot layer vertically off to the right.

For the focal point of the card I wanted to use some of the fun stickers that come in the Cake My Day Collection. There are a whole bunch of birthday greeting words that can all be mixed and matched in whatever way you choose. I decided to use the block word “CELEBRATE” and then the super fun font “YOUR” and “DAY”. I wanted “YOUR” to be front and centre and I also wanted it to be popped out so I adhered the “CELEBRATE” and “DAY” stickers directly to the card front and then I covered the back of the “YOUR” sticker with foam squares and had it pop off the page! I then used one of the party hat stickers to balance the design and add some more fun!

Card #2:

For the second card I chose the background patterned paper to be the multi-coloured chevron pattern and for the smaller layer I chose the blue diagonal stripes. I took the border and cut it along the centre length-wise so that I could use it above and below my focal layer on my card. I adhered half of the border along the backside of the top edge of the blue border and the other half along the backside of the the bottom edge.

I adhered the blue layer to the card front so that the rectangle sat in a horizontal orientation making it line up perfectly with the base layer on either side. I made sure that the space above and below the layer were equal.

Next I adhered the “Birthday” sticker to the bottom right side of the blue layer and then popped up the “HAPPY” sticker with foam squares.

In order to find the placement that I liked best for the balloons I actually snipped the right balloon strings so that I could tuck them in behind the “HAPPY” sticker. Once I was happy with the placement and I applied pressure to adhere the balloon sticker down it wasn’t even noticeable that there was a little snip!

Card #3:

For the third and final card I had some fun with layers and foam squares! To begin, I added the black chevron border to the base layer about one third of the way up the card. I then adhered the pink patterned paper layer to the card using foam squares to give it some height.

Next, I wanted to add the candles to the cake, but I wanted to make it look like the candles were stuck right into the frosting so I took my All-Purpose Scissors and I trimmed the white border off the top of the cake. I then covered the back of the cake sticker in foam squares before adhering the candles to the back of the cake sticker. This way, when I liked the placement of the candles and stuck it to the card front the stickers were adhered directly to the card front and the cake was popped up on the foam squares – it gave it a fun dimensional focal point!

Finally I needed a greeting, and I thought the “happy” yellow speech bubble and the black block “BIRTHDAY” would work perfectly together. I popped those up with foam squares too. It’s hard to tell on the photo above how much the foam squares make a difference on the card front — below I’ve shown just how fun and textured the card can become with the help of a few foam squares!
