How to Create a Vintage Scrapbook Layout with Archiver’s™

Vintage-Scrapbook-Layout-Archiver’s-Collection-Creative-Memories

Five years ago, my Mom gave me a collection of vintage postcards from Bolton Landing, NY, with correspondence from the early 1900s to 1940s. The back of the postcards have small anecdotes written to friends and family. Today, every time that I hear someone talk about their handwriting it’s always with apologies – my handwriting is awful, or, your handwriting is so much better than mine! But, whenever we look back at stories the generations have written before us, we never think… gosh, they have bad handwriting. Rather, we’re fascinated by the note they left us to read and see a small moment in their life.

I was inspired by this new Creative Memories Archiver’s™ page design that Melissa created, so I found my old postcards and decided to write down the story of why my Mom gave them to me.

How to Create This Layout:

I started this layout by creating the circle with the Custom Cutting System. Choose a piece of designer paper and pick up your Red Cartridge and the medium circle. Then, place the blade on the inner track of the circle. For tips on how to use the Custom Cutting System, check out this video filled with tips like… don’t twist your wrist!

Then, pick another piece of designer paper and grab your Jagged Tearing Tool. Place your Tearing Tool down on the paper and tear the paper up while holding the Tearing Tool down. You’ll get a nice jagged edge.

12-inch Trimmer with Typewriter paper

Next, it’s time to do some trimming. Use the 12-inch Trimmer and prep the following designer pieces:

  1. Trim the designer paper with the typewriter .25″ on all sides.
  2. Trim the floral paper that you tore so it measures 8.25″ wide by 5.5″ tall with the torn edge on the left.
  3. Flip that floral paper over and with the torn edge on the left, trim this gray designer paper 7.5″ wide by 5.5″ tall.
  4. Trim the black time clock paper 8.5″ wide by 6.5″ tall.

Now that all of your pieces are prepped, start adhering your pieces in the following order:

  1. Adhere the designer paper with the typewriter to the Black Cardstock, centering the 11.5×11.5″ sheet on the 12×12 Black Cardstock.
  2. Use the Tape Runner to adhere the black time clock sheet down, looking at the picture at the top of this post for reference on placement.
  3. Then, adhere the floral paper with the torn edge on the left.
  4. Adhere the gray designer paper with the torn edge on the left.
  5. Choose 1 border from the Laser Cut Border Embellishment pack. Lay it down at the top of the time clock paper and then use the Scissors to cut it once the border reaches the right edge of the time clock paper.
  6. Use the Repositionable Tape Runner to adhere the right edge of the time clock paper. Here are a few tips on how to use the Repositionable Tape Runner.
  7. Adhere your circle over the border and tuck it behind the designer papers.
  8. Grab a few of your favorite Laser Cut Embellishments and arrange them as you would like to at the left edge of the time clock paper with the Repositionable Tape Runner Refill.
  9. Then, use the Repositionable Tape Runner Refill again to adhere a few embellishments over the circle at the top right of the page.
  10. Use your Foam Squares to adhere the word “REMEMBER” on the typewriter paper. Start in the center and work your way out from both sides – this helps you ensure that you end up centering the word on the typewriter paper.
  11. Then, choose your vintage photos or postcards and either your Photo Corners or Repositionable Tape Runner to adhere your photos on your layout.
  12. Finally, use the photo-safe Black Dual-Tip Pen to tell your story!

  1. thank you for this… are their any Creative Memories workshops in the Wapp. Falls, NY area?

      1. Hi Pat – I’m actually in Minneapolis, Minnesota now but used to live in the Albany, NY area for about 7 years. This page design would look awesome with a hero image from Niagara Falls though!

  2. These are wonderful layouts! My mom’s old albums are falling apart and the collection and all the ideas are inspiring me!

  3. I love the layouts with the Archiver’s Collection. It will work great for a son who is into Steam Punk. Any ideas for how to do it? Or maybe I just need to copy what you have here.

    1. Hi Alice – I think that Archiver’s will be perfect for Steam Punk. I think that you could start with this layout and choose the gear Laser Cut Embellishments as well as the gears in the Laser Cut Border Embellishments. The papers also have a few patterns that are more steel / mechanical inspired!

  4. I just completed this layout. It’s beautiful and I’m also finding if you have any of the Divine Papers or embellishments, it would be a great way to use of some of your “leftovers”.

  5. Beautiful layout! Was taken back to my childhood, having spent my summers in the 1950s at Schroon Lane too!

      1. Hi Joane – I’ve been going to Schroon Lake for a week every summer since I was born (as has my Mom and her family). She grew up in Schenectady in the 1950s. I got married in Bolton Landing, which is where the postcards in this layout are from.

    1. Hi Alison, How cool about your summers at Schroon Lake. I am from Albany with lots of relatives in Schenectady and Schoharie. My Aunt and Uncle had a cottage in the village of Adirondack on Schroon Laakewhich is how my cousins and I got to spend our summers there. I love your old post cards from Bolton Landing and I even remember those 1 cent stamps! Shows you how old I am. (Living in Tennessee now.) As I said above, I love your layout. Blessings!
