A certain cartoon crab once said that life is better under the sea. Although our lack of gills makes it impossible for us to confirm this, that doesn’t stop us from using our imagination to picture what a life underwater would be like. It certainly didn’t stop the granddaughter of blog contributor Vanessa, who decided on having a mermaid-themed party for her third birthday. This gave Vanessa the idea of using the Sun-Kissed collection and adjusting it to make her layout for the party capture the aquatic essence of the event. The result? An underwater-themed scrapbook layout that looks like it came straight from the bottom of the ocean!
Blog Contributor Vanessa’s Inspiration:
My daughter was in the process of organizing a mermaid-themed party for her daughter’s third birthday when I first saw the Sun-Kissed collection. I texted her and told her I had the perfect papers for the birthday layout. As my daughter turned her house into the ocean with hanging jellyfish, clam shells, seaweed, fish and bubbles, I decided to edge my interpretation of the sketch with the Rolling Waves Border Maker Cartridge to recreate the photos being “under the sea.” I chose the clamshell Sun-Kissed paper for the background and used the Circle Custom Cutting System Patterns for the clamshell journaling box. I found the Sun-Kissed Stickers went really well with the theme. I am sure my granddaughter will treasure this memory of her party, especially the mermaid sticker!

How to Make a Mermaid Scrapbook Layout
Step 1: Use two sheets of Royal Blue Cardstock as the base of this two-page layout.
Step 2: Using the Border Maker System and Rolling Waves Border Maker Cartridge, punch six wave borders using the water patterned paper. Trim these borders to measure 1-1/4″ wide.
Step 3: Cut two light blue clamshell papers to measure 11″ x 10″. Make sure to keep the clamshell pattern vertical. Adhere the wave borders behind three edges of the clam papers using Repositionable Adhesive. Keep the waves going in the same direction. Adhere these pieces to the Royal Blue Cardstock.
Step 4: Cut two pieces of the peach-colored paper to measure 9-1/2″ x 4″. Adhere to the lower section of the left-hand side of the layout, 3/4″ up from the bottom of the clamshell patterned paper. Adhere the other piece to the right-hand side of the layout 3/4″ from the top of the clamshell patterned paper.
Step 5: Cut photo mats from the water patterned paper and the peach-colored mats. The top four mats measure 4″ x 5-1/2″ and the bottom two measure 6-1/4″ x 3-3/4″. Adhere your photos to the mats and then to the to the layout as shown.
Step 6: To make jellyfish, cut a circle using Peacock Cardstock and Custom Cutting System, using the Red Blade on the inside of the smallest circle. Cut a second circle using light blue patterned paper on the inside of the smallest circle using the Green Blade. Cut both of the circles in half. Using scissors, cut a small wavy edge on the straight edge of the light blue half circle. Adhere to top of the peacock half circle.
Step 7: Using the 12-inch Decorative Trimmer, cut a couple strips that measure 1/8″ wide using the wavy section. Then, cut into seven strips in various lengths up to 4-1/4″ long. Adhere behind the peacock half circle using Repositionable Adhesive. Add jellyfish to the upper right-hand side of the layout. Use a Black Dual-Tip Pen to make a line of dots on the jellyfish body.
Step 7: To make the seashell journaling box, use the smallest circle from the Custom Cutting System to cut a circle on the outside with the Red Blade on Goldenrod Cardstock. Shape the circle into a clamshell shape with pencil then cute with scissors.
Step 8: To make tabs, punch a small section of the peach patterned paper with the Rolling Waves Border Maker Cartridge and then trim to measure 3/4″ x 4″. Cut two strips of Orange Cardstock to measure 1″ x 4″ and cut one end into a point with scissors. Adhere each of the peach pieces to orange strips. Then, adhere the strips to the upper left-hand side of layout horizontally and lower right-hand side of the layout vertically.
Step 9: Adhere Sun-Kissed Stickers to the layout, using Foam Squares on some for added dimension. I added a cut-out of the birthday girl behind the mermaid sticker in the lower right-hand side of the two-page layout. Finish by adding a title using the ABC/123 Stickers and journaling using a Black Dual-Tip Pen.
I hope you enjoy using this mermaid scrapbook layout to inspire your own sea themes with your photos. The Sun-Kissed Paper Pack is so versatile; I really enjoyed using it and know you will also have a lot of fun with it scrapbooking memories of your own.
