Life is better on the water. You spend your days lounging, relaxing and listening to the lapping waves — it’s all so picture perfect and sometimes a postcard just won’t do it justice. In those moments, let DIY do all the work! With the Deep Blue Sea collection, you can fashion some DI-wonderfully water-filled cards that would make any landlubber green with envy. (Side note: Did you know the term is actually landlubber, not land-lover??) Check out these nautical card ideas and try these coastal creations yourself!
Tina’s Inspiration
I created these cards using the Deep Blue Sea Variety Mat Pack, Stickers and the Scallop Wave Border Maker Cartridge. I purposely didn’t use the Deep Blue Sea Paper Pack because I wanted to challenge myself to only use those three products. Cards are a great way to use leftover stickers and mats for the cruisers and sea-lovers in your life. I hope this project is inspirational and gives people the courage to make a few. You don’t need much to create beautiful handmade cards!
For this this project, you will need:
- Deep Blue Sea Variety Mat Pack or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
- Deep Blue Sea Stickers or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
- Any Cardstock or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
- Original Border Maker System with Scallop Wave Border Maker Cartridge or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
- 12-inch Trimmer or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
- 2-Way Corner Rounder or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
- All-Purpose Scissors or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
- Tape Runner or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
- Repositionable Tape Runner Refill or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
- Foam Squares or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)

All card bases measure 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″. To create the bases, cut a piece of cardstock into a 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ rectangle using the 12-inch Trimmer outfitted with the Straight Blade. Open the blade housing, remove the Straight Blade and insert the Scoring Blade. Place the cardstock rectangle in the trimmer with the long edge at the top. Score it at 4-1/4″ and remove it from the trimmer. Fold it in half to create a standard card.
Whale Card:
- Using two mats from the Deep Blue Sea Variety Mat Pack, punch out some waves using the Scallop Wave Border Maker Cartridge.
- Adhere the whale sticker to one mat and cut out the whale with All-Purpose Scissors, creating a small border.
- Alternate the wave borders and trim them to fit the card. Adhere the borders to the card.
- Use the bottom of the sailboat sticker to create the rock and add the two shells on top. Adhere them to the card.
- Use Foam Squares to pop up the whale and adhere it to the card.

Seaside Serenity Card:
- Using three mats from the Deep Blue Sea Variety Mat Pack, punch out several waves using the Scallop Wave Border Maker Cartridge.
- Adhere a sticker to one mat and cut it out, leaving a thin border around it.
- Alternate the wave borders and trim them to fit the card. Adhere the border to the card.
- Use Foam Squares to pop up the sticker and adhere it to the card.

Compass Card:
- Adhere one dark blue mat to the card.
- Using border stickers, create a border around the edges of the card.
- Adhere the compass sticker to a 2-1/2″ x 2-1/2″ square cut from a light blue mat. Use the 2-Way Corner Rounder to finish the design.
- Use Foam Squares to pop up the compass and adhere it to the middle of the card.
