Gift cards take the guess work out of gift-giving. Whether it’s for a niece who’d rather pick out her own clothes or a co-worker you don’t know that well, a gift card covers all the recipient bases! The only drawback is that it can seem a bit impersonal. Thankfully, blog contributor Tina has a solution for that with her DIY gift card holders idea! Check it out!
Tina’s Inspiration
My inspiration for this project was to elevate the popularity of giving gift cards with this festive alternative to generic holders some gift cards come with. I found that it’s a great way to use the scrapbooking supplies you already have on hand to create a gift card holder that will last for years to come.
For this this project, you will need:
- Crimson, Dark Green and White Cardstock or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
- Merry Little Christmas Paper Pack or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
- Festive Plaid Paper Pack or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
- Pine Tree Punch or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
- 2-Way Corner Rounder or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
- 12-inch Trimmer with Straight and Scoring Blades or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
- Custom Cutting System with Circle Patterns or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
- Precision Point Adhesive Pen or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
- Tape Runner or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
- Repositionable Tape Runner Refill or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
- 3/8″ VELCRO® brand Dots
Step 1: Cut one sheet of cardstock into three pieces measuring 3-1/2″ x 8-1/2″.
Step 2: Using the 12-inch Trimmer and the Scoring Blade, score the cardstock 2″ from one end. Measure 4″ from the first score mark and score again. Fold at the score marks to crisp the edges.
Step 3: Use the 2-Way Corner Rounder to round the corners on the 2″ end to finish the flap.
Step 4: Cut three pieces of patterned paper to measure 3-1/4″ x 1-3/4″, 3-1/4″ x 2-1/4″ and 3-1/4″ x 3-3/4″.
Step 5: Use the 2-Way Corner Rounder to round the corners of one end of the smallest piece of paper. This piece will be put on the flap and will match the rounded corners of the base piece.
Step 6: Adhere the patterned paper pieces to the outside of the gift card holder using the Tape Runner.
Step 7: Use the Precision Point Adhesive Pen along the side edges of the 2-1/4″ end of the cardstock to make the pocket. Be careful to run the adhesive close to the edge on each side so there is plenty of room for the gift card to slide in and out of the pocket.
Step 8: Cut out two circles from the inside of the medium Custom Cutting System Circle Pattern (cut one circle with the Blue Blade and one circle with the Green Blade).
Step 9: Punch out a tree using the Pine Tree Punch. Adhere the two circles together using the Tape Runner. Use Repositionable adhesive to adhere the tree to the circle medallion. Note: If you do not have this punch, add a Merry Little Christmas sticker to the middle instead!
Step 10: Adhere the entire medallion to the top half of the flap using the Tape Runner. Attach a VELCRO® brand dot to the flap for closure.
Step 11: Slide your gift cards into the holders.
This project looks great with any patterned paper and cardstock combo you choose, so it’s not only great Christmas, but also birthdays and other celebrations in which you’re gifting money in any form. What types of DIY card holders will you create? Let us know in the comments below!

I think the hardest thing about creating cards for my card makers is writing the instructions. I know what I mean, but conveying it to others so that they can understand and execute it is a whole different ballgame!! So I know what you mean about not quite understanding the instructions at first. Glad you conquered that first big step! :~)

Neat. I’ve been making gift card holders for years… Taking empty toilet paper rolls, flatten them, cover with scrapbook paper, Punch 3 holes in 1 end and tie short pieces of ribbon in each hole. Embellish. Cut a tag (the new tag punch is perfect!) . Attach corner 4 photo corners to hold the card. I sell them for 2/$1-$1 ea depending on what embellishments I add. I’ve made some ‘special order’ card holders for baby gift cards and birthday gift cards.
Great way to ‘jazz up’ Gift Cards for ANY occasion! TEACHER gifts, Birthdays, New Mom, Thank You, etc.
