Soak Up the Sun With These Hot Summer Scrapbook Ideas

What sorts of things do you associate with the summertime? Do you reflect upon lounging under the shade of an umbrella or tree or days spent relaxing at the beach? Does your mind wander to sinking your teeth into some chilled, tasty treats? Or do you think about the fun, vibrant apparel you wear during these warm months? No matter what your summer style is, there’s a project for that — blog contributor Sachiyo Omitsu came up with some incredible summer scrapbook ideas for you to decorate your albums with!

Sachiyo’s Inspiration — Sandcastle Border

I, as a parent of two boys, love to take our kids to the beach. It’s always fun to see how they get creative with sand — once we get there, they’ll start building all sorts of sandcastles, mountains and rivers. When was the last time you built a sandcastle?

To create this border you will need:

Step 1: Using the Flip Flops Border Maker Cartridge, punch a border from the yellow patterned paper. Cut the border to measure 1-1/2″ x 12″ with the 12-inch Decorative Trimmer. Cut another border to measure 2-1/4″ x 12″ with the 12-inch Trimmer. Use the 2-1/4″ border as the base.

Step 2: Cut the Beige Cardstock to measure 1-3/4″ x 12″ with the 12-inch Decorative Trimmer. Adhere it onto the base. Add the 1-1/2″ border on top.

Step 3: Cut two circles using the inside of the largest Custom Cutting System Circle Pattern with the Blue and Green Blades from the aqua patterned paper. Adhere the smaller circle onto the larger one. Adhere it to the base.

Step 4: Using the Firecracker Punch, punch three firecrackers from the yellow patterned paper. Trim the pieces as shown.

Step 5: Cut the yellow patterned paper to measure 1″ x 1″, using the 12-inch Trimmer Stamping Blade on one side. Cut the square by 1/4″ from the stamp design side with All-Purpose Scissors.

Step 6: Adhere the sandcastle pieces to the circle. Add stickers and embellishments, using Foam Squares on some for added dimension.

Sachiyo’s Inspiration — Ice Cream Layout

One of the first things I discovered when I moved from Japan a couple of years ago was that American people are incredibly talented at making ice cream! Birthday cake, Neapolitan, chocolate peanut butter, rocky road… the list goes on and on! Have I got you craving ice cream now? Check out this layout!

To create this layout you will need:

Step 1: Use a piece of Aqua Cardstock as the base.

Step 2: Cut the yellow patterned paper to measure 10″ x 10″ with the 12-inch Trimmer. Using the Flip Flops Border Maker Cartridge, punch one side of the yellow patterned paper. Fold the lower left corner to make an ice cream cone and add to the base.

Step 3: Punch the sprinkles patterned paper using the Clouds Border Maker Cartridge. Using the inside of the medium Custom Cutting System Circle Pattern and the Red Blade, cut a circle, making sure the paper is not completely cut. Cut along the curve of the clouds with the All-Purpose Scissors so that it looks like a scoop of ice cream. Repeat the same steps with the purple patterned paper to make two more scoops of ice cream.

Step 4: Adhere the ice cream scoops, stickers and embellishments — use Foam Squares for added dimension.

Sachiyo’s Inspiration — Flip Flops Border

Did you know flip-flops were inspired by a Japanese fabric thong “zori?” The modern flip-flop was inspired by Ray Pastine, an industrial designer in the U.S., and created by Japanese rubber engineer Shohei Ikuta in 1952. In Japan, we still wear traditional zori with the “kimono,” a traditional Japanese garment, but we see more flip flops these days in America — especially in summer. When I see the Flip Flops Border Maker Cartridge, I see fun flip-flops and traditional Japanese zori. You may want to use this cartridge not only for beach photos, but also photos taken at your treasured Japanese restaurant!

  1. LOVE the ice cream cone! Genius! Can’t wait to make some of those! Also I was trying to resist the firecracker punch. The sandcastle got me. Sold! Just purchased the firecracker punch. Thank you Sachiyo!
