Commemorate Servicepeople With Pops of Poppies: Anzac Day Scrapbooking Idea

Anzac Day, celebrated every year on the 25th of April, commemorates the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during World War I. Today, the meaning of Anzac Day (in which ANZAC stands for “Australian and New Zealand Army Corps”) includes the remembrance of all Australians and New Zealanders “who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations” and “the contribution and suffering of all those who have served.” To pay respect to this national day, blog contributor Kylie Kingham put together this Anzac Day scrapbooking idea with pops of poppies!

Anzac Day is always a very special day for my family and myself. It is also one filled with many emotions. Both of my children march every year and we spend the day attending services whilst paying our respects to not only our own family who have served, but also to all servicemen and servicewomen. When I first saw the Wide Open Places collection, I noticed the sticker sheet had some flowers that looked a lot like poppies. I knew the palette would be perfect for creating a layout to document some of our Anzac Day memories. I also couldn’t resist making some larger poppies to adorn my page.

To create this layout you will need:

• Wide Open Places Stickers or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
• Wide Open Places Laser Cut Mats or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
• Black Solid Cardstock or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
• 2-Way Corner Rounder or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
• Custom Cutting System with Circle Patterns or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
• 12-inch Trimmer or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
• Micro-Tip Scissors or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia) 
• Five Leaf Punch or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
• 3-in-1 Bevel Tag Punch or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
• Repositionable Tape Runner or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)
• Foam Squares or (Shop Canada | Shop Australia)

Step 1: Trim a designer piece of paper to measure 11-1/2″ x 11-1/2″ and adhere it over a contrasting paper so there is a neat border. (Alternatively you can remove the middle from the very bottom piece to conserve paper.)

Step 2: Trim another piece of contrasting paper to measure 11-1/2″ x 5″ and adhere to the top of the page. Using the Southwestern laser-cut mat, trim away both long edges and adhere the two remaining pieces with squares aligned at the top of the page, approximately 1/2″- 3/4″ down from the top of the page.

Step 3: Add a 6″ x 4″ photo to the rustic barn wood laser-cut mat and adhere near the top of the page. Trim two photo mats to measure 4″ x 4″ and adhere below the larger photo. Trim two photos to measure 3-3/4″ x 3-3/4″ and adhere over the mats.

Step 4: To make a poppy:

• Each poppy requires two circles plus a small middle circle.
• With the inside edge of the the medium Custom Cutting System Circle Pattern, cut two circles with the Red Blade for each poppy.
• Fold a circle neatly in half and place each corner into the 2-Way Corner Rounder and punch. Open out the circle and fold in half in the opposite direction and punch both corners. Repeat this with the second circle. Adhere one circle over the top of the other, making sure the top “petals” sit in between the bottom petals.
• With the inside edge of the the smallest Custom Cutting System Circle Pattern and Blue Blade, cut a circle from Black Solid Cardstock. Using scissors, fringe cut all the way around the circle. Don’t worry if you accidentally cut a fringe off, it adds to the effect. Adhere this circle in the middle of the poppy with a Foam Square for added dimension.
• Repeat this process to make more poppies (five poppies are included in this layout).

Step 5: Adhere the poppies to the layout with the Repositionable Tape Runner. Using the Five Leaf Punch, punch some foliage from teal plaid designer paper and adhere behind each poppy to keep a nice balance.

Step 6: Punch a 2-1/2″ wide x 3″ long tag using the 3-in-1 Bevel Tag Punch and journal or add the Anzac Day oath to it. Adhere to the layout.

Step 7: With the inside edge of the smallest Custom Cutting System Circle Pattern and Red Blade, cut a circle from designer paper. From a contrasting paper, cut a second circle using the Green Blade. Adhere the smaller circle over the top of the larger and adhere to the middle of the top border. Add a cluster of the flowers and foliage from the sticker sheet.
