At the ancient root of it all, humans acquired food by hunting animals, capturing fish and gathering wild edibles like plants and greens, berries and seeds. Sure, nowadays we drive to the local supermarket or enjoy food delivery services, but going back to those roots (literally!) can be so rewarding. Foraging is the process of searching, identifying and harvesting wild food in nature, like wild garlic (aka ramsons), chestnuts, morel and chanterelle mushrooms, blueberries, common nettles, dandelions and more. It’s especially trendy for those interested in eating more sustainably or to have a deeper connection to the land and changing seasons. (Added bonus: It makes for days of family fun!)
