Beyond the Paper: A Conversation with Madelyn on Reliving Memories

Memory keeping isn’t a one-size-fits-all thing. We all start at different stages and we all have different ways of doing it. Some people need a perfect layout to feel finished, but others just want to get the story down.

Madelyn Vosburg, our Marketing Coordinator, has her own way of keeping memories alive. For her, it’s not about following instructions or making sure every edge is straight. It’s about reliving the moment while she’s making it. By scrapping outside of the box and just throwing ideas at the page to see what sticks, she’s found a way to honor her favorite stories that feels raw, real, and personal.

Watch: Madelyn, from home office, shows us what she’s scrapping and the “why” behind her pages.

A Moment with Madelyn

Q: We all have thousands of photos sitting on our phones. What was the ‘click’ moment for you that made you want to actually start putting yours onto paper?

“I actually feel like I have touched nearly every creative or crafty thing but scrapbooking. I started at Creative Memories as the Marketing Coordinator less than a year ago. Being around all of the creativity, hearing all the ideas, and seeing Advisors and the community really pushed me to give it a try.

I have so many photos on my phone and grew up in this digital world, but I think I always wanted an outlet like this to put things on paper. I found the Scrap Journal really appealing to me right away. It felt less intimidating and like a good start to my memory keeping journey because I loved the idea of a scrapbook mixed with a junk journal.

I took this as my opportunity to just express myself creatively. The first Scrap Journal I finished is like my prized possession. Every page has its own personality, and I love that they don’t have to look uniform to tell a great story. Honestly, it feels like its own messy piece of art. I feel so lucky to have found the art of memory keeping at this age. I know this is something I hope to keep growing with, and just thinking of all the things I am going to be able to look back on gives me goosebumps”.

Q: In your video, you’re working on a trip to Maine. Talk to us about your process and how it feels to relive those stories.

“For me, I’ve found that memory keeping has allowed me to make memories much more intentionally. I am a sucker for keeping ticket stubs, hitting every photobooth I see, or keeping fabric from old shirts. I will keep just about any piece that ties me to a memory. It makes me feel like I am truly reliving those moments every time I open my Scrap Journal.

I try to keep the pressure off of myself when it comes to my process. I love ripping papers, trying new things, and layering to build a textured, extensive base for those photos. The Delight Scrap Journal collection was perfect for this because the designs feel so organic and easy to layer. I love mixing and matching patterns and playing into the memories themselves while giving my photos a beautiful permanent home.

Right now I am working on travel memories with my mom. We went to Maine for a post grad trip and we came back with so many stories, photos, and little pieces from where we stayed. I didn’t want the memories to end, but here I am finally allowing myself to relive them and give them a home. I love taking time to write down dates, locations, and inside jokes. I can’t wait to finish building out this Scrap Journal. I just know it is one I am going to come back to again and again”.

Q: What would you say to someone who is curious about the Scrap Journal or memory keeping in general?

“Well, first I would say it is seriously never too late to get started. Everyone has their own creative journey and that is the beauty in it. There is such inspiration in this Creative Memories community. I know every memory keeper will be able to find their own inspiration and a creative home here.

For those who already scrapbook, I am definitely not here to tell anyone to stop their traditional layouts! But sometimes it’s fun to just take a creative turn. Think of a Scrap Journal as a low-pressure place to practice or play. It’s a great way to try new things, mess around with textures, or try something new.

I am actually documenting my Maine trip alongside my mom because I got her her own Scrap Journal Kit to start her memory keeping journey. She is able to step into my scrapbooking world and she is excited to start. I think doing this with friends is so fun.”

There is nothing quite like the feeling of finishing a page and knowing that memory is safe. As Madelyn said, thinking about all the things we’ll be able to look back on years from now is enough to give anyone goosebumps.

So, take a page out of Madelyn’s book: take a creative turn, play with some new textures, and start building your own prized possession today.
