Did you know that it’s scientifically proven that the more birthdays you have, the longer you live? This is why a collection like the Happy BirthYAY is so important — birthdays are a good thing for everyone involved! The Happy BirthYAY collection is the ultimate tool for a scrapbooker who is commemorating a birthday, thanks mostly to the fact that it evokes a sense of everything we love about celebrations — fun, playfulness and joy. How was this essence so perfectly captured? We sat down with Alex, the designer and illustrator of this collection, to find out what inspired her when designing this collection. Let’s take a look!
Meet the Designer
Alex has been working with CM as a product designer and illustrator for over a year now! Before working for Creative Memories, she was a freelance illustrator and graphic designer. Now she happily spends her days making art for you fine folks.
Other collections she has designed include Bee Mine, Full Bloom, Sun-Kissed, O Canada, Lumberjack, Best in Show, Locally Grown, Essentials, Season’s Greetings, Scrap Happy and Imagine That! Outside of work, Alex enjoys pattern-making and loves to cook, travel, read nerdy sci-fi novels and snuggle with her pets, Larry (dog) and Alphonse (cat). And she just got married this last August!
What Inspired This Collection?
“Party decorations, layered birthday cakes, sweet treats and rainbows… this line was inspired by birthdays and the colorful celebrations that surround them. It’s festive, bright, cheerful, youthful, friendly, positive and fun.”
How Would You Describe the Color Palette?
“It has the friendliest rainbow of colors! You’ll find melon red, sky blue, kelly green, cotton candy pink and a citrus lemon-lime tone as well.”
How Would You Describe the Papers?
“The lead designer paper is probably the arched rainbow stripe. We have an icon
paper with party hats, gifts, balloons and cupcakes. There are two ombre papers,
which I like to think of as snowcones (one is definitely a watermelon-flavored one!).
We have party decorations, confetti, frosted sheet cakes that have floral clusters, a
shining bokeh paper, splatter confetti and some simpler journaling papers as well.”
What is Unique About the Collection?
“The embellishments are delightful; you can build your own cake or “Pinterest-
ready” party spread with the different die cuts. The artwork itself is hand-drawn and
covered in expressive texture to make it truly unique. Also—everyone’s
favorite—letter balloons!”
What Do You Envision This Collection Being Used For?
“Kids or adults’ birthdays, or any kind of fun and cheerful celebration.”
Tell us a Fun Fact About the Collection!
“I was inspired by all the party planning tricks on Pinterest, so I modeled a lot of the
artwork after those parties. Decorations and sweets were definitely a focal point
during my creation process.”
