March Virtual Crop’s Full Size to Fun Size Sketches are Here!
As more scrapbookers fall in love with Creative Memories’ Scrap Journal, adapting 12″ x 12″ Virtual Crop sketches from the Virtual Crop Group to fit 6.75″ x 10″ pages becomes a fun creative challenge! The most important thing to keep in mind is that every element is simply on a smaller scale, but you are not limited to sticking to the sketch exactly!
Because you’re converting from a square page to a rectangle, proportionally shrinking everything doesn’t always work. While you can calculate ratios, that approach doesn’t necessarily create the most balanced result. Instead, focus on preserving the integrity of the sketch while adjusting elements in a way that feels natural on a slimmer page.
That also means not every element needs to make the transition. There simply isn’t as much real estate on a 6.75″ x 10″ page, and that’s perfectly fine! We hope you use this blog post as a way to inspire you to create something that fits in your Scrap Journal, and hopefully you have fun doing it!
Photo Sizing Tips for Scrap Journal Pages
When resizing layouts, photo sizes often shift, too. Instead of your standard sizes, consider downsizing slightly to accommodate more photos on your page.
- 3″ x 4″ or 4″ x 3″
- 2″ x 3″ of 3″ x 2″
- 3″ x 3″
- 2″ x 2″
These sizes are easy to print at home or with your favorite photo processor by creating collages with various apps or creative websites such as Canva. For more tips on printing at a smaller scale, check out this video! That said, larger prints still work beautifully as focal points. A 4″ x 6″ or even a 5″ x 7″ photo can anchor a Scrap Journal page when you want one standout image.
Layout Inspiration

This sketch is a great example of how rotating or flipping a design can help it fit the Scrap Journal format without losing its original feel. Start by scaling down both the photo sizes and paper elements, keeping the overall structure intact.
For the side borders, combine the Whimsical Scallop Border Punch with the Twist Blade on the 12-inch Trimmer. Tuck both slightly under the Deep Sea Green photo mat so they act as subtle accents rather than taking up valuable space. Add Foam Squares to the embellishments to create dimension and allow flexibility when placing photos later. This approach keeps the layout interactive while adding depth and visual interest.

This sketch can easily be adapted into either a one-page or two-page Scrap Journal layout. For a single-page version, cluster two 3″ x 3″ photos on the same mat to create a strong focal point. Busy patterned papers, like the Bouncing Candle design, work especially well when layered behind a photo cluster. Let just a portion peek out to add energy without overwhelming the page.
To fill vertical space, use coordinating border stickers from the collection. If stickers aren’t available, a border punch, Border Maker Cartridge or decorative blade on the 12-inch Trimmer will achieve a similar effect. For a clean, precise cut, trim border stickers lengthwise while they’re still on the backing paper using the 12-inch Trimmer. This keeps the edges straight and easy to manage.

This layout shows how to balance a mix of photo sizes while keeping the page cohesive. Use three 3″ x 3″ photos and replace the fourth space with a decorative journal box to add variety and create a natural spot for storytelling. The embellishments in this collection are especially well-suited for Scrap Journal pages and help tie everything together.
Larger photos can still play an important role. Incorporating a 4″ x 6″ image adds a strong focal point while still leaving room for additional photos across the spread. Border stickers are used here for added detail, but similar results can be achieved with border punches or a decorative blade. If working with clear stickers, place them on white cardstock before adhering them to patterned paper. This helps maintain visibility and prevents the design from getting lost.

This sketch is a great opportunity to layer elements while keeping everything scaled appropriately for the Scrap Journal. Start by reducing the size of the layered tags so they fit comfortably within the 6.75″ x 10″ format. To create the look of added depth behind the beige cardstock, lightly distress the edges using Rich Cocoa Ink.
Ground embellishment clusters by placing them on simple punched shapes, like an embossed hexagon. This gives the cluster a foundation and helps it stand out on the page. A 4″ x 6″ focal image anchors the layout, while additional photos round out the story. Two 4″ x 6″ photos could also be used on the right page if preferred. Finish with Foam Squares to add dimension and keep the design feeling layered and complete.
