A Bold Look with Blackout Brush

Blackout Brush makes it easy to play with pattern while keeping your page grounded in a neutral palette. The black, white and cream pieces can be mixed with other collections or layered together for a more artistic look. This layout leans into that bold pattern mix, showing just how much personality you can get from a mostly neutral page. Follow along for the instructions to create it yourself!

To create this layout, you will need:

  • 5×5 Stencil – Splattered Elements
  • Craft Blending Brush – Caramel
  • Ink Pad – Caramel
  • 13×13 Non-Stick Craft Mat
  • Place and Peel Tape
  • 12-inch Trimmer
  • Photo Trimmer
  • Repositionable Tape Runner
  • Foam Squares
  • Black Dual-Tip Pen

Step 1: Use Caramel Solid Cardstock as the base for this layout. Cut a 9-1/2″ x 11-1/2″ piece of skinny stripe designer paper and adhere the piece 1/4” from the left edge of the layout.

Step 2: Cut a 4-1/2″ x 12″ piece from the big dots designer paper and a 1/2″ x 12″ strip from Black Solid Cardstock. Adhere the right edge of the big dots piece 1/8″ from the right edge of the cardstock strip. Adhere the layered piece 1″ from the left edge of the layout.

Step 3: Use the Original Border Maker System with the Ink Wave Chain Border Maker Cartridge to punch a border from Black Solid Cardstock. Adhere the border to the left edge of the big dots strip.

Step 4: Cut a 4″ x 10-1/4″ piece from Caramel Solid Cardstock and adhere it on top of the big dots piece as shown. Cut a 3-3/4″ x 10″ piece from brushstroke designer paper and adhere it to the center of the previous cardstock piece.

Step 5: Cut a 7″ x 6-1/4″ piece from Caramel Solid Cardstock and adhere it to the layout as shown. Cut a 6-3/4″ x 6″ piece from inky circles designer paper and adhere it to the previous piece.

Step 6: Cut a 6-3/8″ x 5-1/4″ piece from Caramel Solid Cardstock and adhere it to the layout as shown. Crop two photos to measure 3″ x 5″ and adhere them to the previous piece as shown.

Step 7: Cut two 3-1/4″ x 3-1/4″ photo mats from Black Solid Cardstock. Crop two photos to measure 3″ x 3″ and adhere them to the mats. Adhere the matted photos to the right side of the layout as shown.

Step 8: Use Place and Peel Tape to adhere the Splattered Elements Inking Stencil to the top right edge of the skinny stripe designer paper. Use the Caramel Craft Blending Brush to apply Caramel Ink to the stencil. Repeat this process on the bottom edge of the skinny stripe designer paper.

Step 9: Use the Original Border Maker System with the Ink Wave Chain Border Maker Cartridge to punch a border from Black Solid Cardstock. Trim the border to measure 5-5/8″ and adhere it to the bottom of the layout as shown.

Step 10: Use a Black Dual-Tip Pen to add journaling as shown. Adhere stickers with Foam Squares for added dimension.
