A Layout to Commemorate Anzac Day

25 April marks Anzac Day, the national day of remembrance honouring members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who were killed in military operations. The day itself is the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during World War I. To commemorate the day, Australian blog contributor Kylie Kingham created an Anzac Day scrapbooking layout.

Kylie’s Inspiration

I was inspired by the earthy and muted tones of the Sunburnt Country papers to create a page for Anzac Day. I really wanted my layout to have a ‘Vintage’ or ‘Heritage’ theme and think this collection lends itself perfectly for that. A pleated border was the main focal point and I have been able to team the Called To Serve stickers on my layout — perfect to document past or present service men and women.

Anzac Day inspired scrapbooking layout.

To create this layout you will need:

Step 1: Trim a sheet of tonal eucalyptus paper to measure 11-1/2” x 11-1/2”. Adhere over a sheet of Hot Fudge Solid Cardstock centred. (Tip: To conserve supply you can ‘gut’ or remove the centre of the cardstock first.)

Step 2: Trim a strip of teal stripes paper to measure 2-1/2” x 10-3/4”. Score this strip of paper at the following measurements:

  • 3/4”
  • 1”
  • 1-3/4”
  • 2”
  • 2-3/4”
  • 3”
  • 3-3/4”
  • 4”
  • 4-3/4”
  • 5”
  • 5-3/4”
  • 6”
  • 6-3/4”
  • 7”
  • 7-3/4”
  • 8”
  • 8-3/4”
  • 9”
  • 9-3/4”
  • 10”

Step 3: Hold the scored strip vertically and begin folding from the score line closest to you. Fold the first line toward you. Fold the second line away from you. Fold the third line down and the fourth line up. This will form the first ‘pleat’. Repeat this same process all the way along the strip.

Step 4: Using the 2-Way Corner Rounder, punch each corner of the strip. Note: You may need to fold the pleats out gently, then reposition once you have punched the corners. Set aside for now.

Step 5: Trim a strip of the same teal stripes paper to measure 12” x 1” and set aside.

Step 6: From red rock paper, trim a strip to measure 3” x 11-1/2”. Using the CM Zero-Centering Ruler and pencil, mark each long side at halfway — 5-3/4”.

Step 7: Insert the red rock strip into the 12-inch Decorative Trimmer — you will be using the less wavy edge to cut. Align the pencil marking to the 6-1/4” measurement on the vertical side of the trimmer and 3/4” in. Trim the thin edge away and save it. Rotate the strip and repeat.

Step 8: From the Australia map paper, cut a strip using the 12-inch Trimmer and the Scallop Blade to measure 2-3-4” x 11-1/2”. Adhere this strip at the base of the layout 1-1/2” up from the bottom of the page.

Step 9: Adhere the wide, wavy red rock strip centred over the top of the Australia map strip. Next, adhere the 12” x 1” teal stripes strip over the top and in the centre of the red rock strip. Add a border sticker over the top of the teal stripes strip.

Step 10: Adhere the pleated piece in the centre of the border. Try to adhere it as flat as possible.

Step 11: Trim a strip of Australia map paper to measure 3-4” x 11-1/2”. Adhere this at the top of the page. Adhere one of the thin wavy red rock strips (saved from Step 7) over the top.

Step 12: From golden wattle paper, trim photo mats to the following sizes: (1) 4” x 6”, (1) 4” x 3” and (2) 3” x 3”. Photos will be trimmed to: (1) 3-3/4” x 5-3/4”, (1) 3-3/4” x 2-3/4” and (2) 2-3/4” x 2-3/4”. Adhere the photos to their mats and add to the layout. Complete the page by embellishing with stickers.
